Remember that classic Simpsons episode where Bart touches an electrified muffin despite clear warnings and then does it again and again even after painful shocks?
Looks pretty foolish, right?
But isn't that the exact same thing we are doing with climate change? Just like Bart we had all the warnings beforehand and now find ourselves repeatedly ‘getting shocked’ by Mother Earth but don’t seem to stop the practices that contribute to climate change.
This raises an important question: Will negative reinforcement like fines, carbon taxes, or high prices in an ETS actually make us change our behaviour?
Does that metaphorical electrified muffin we keep touching really look so tasty?
Relying solely on negative measures might not be enough. I believe that we might need a better mix of incentives, education, and positive reinforcement to drive meaningful change in our climate actions.
Will we keep being Bart, or will we finally learn to listen to the warnings?
